Based on comedian Michelle Buteau’s book of essays, the Netflix series follows Mavis Beaumont, a plus-sized Black woman, as she breaks up with her boyfriend and tries to build her brand as a struggling stylist. “I’m gonna keep it moving and keep my plants watered,” she tells her friends.
There’s a steamy love affair (“I feel like an Amish teenager during Rumspringa,” says Mavis)…

…and GREAT style inspiration. Mavis puts together very cute outfits, including this two-toned shirt, which I stalked the internet for but I think is sold out? (This brown one and striped one are cool, too.)
Mavis is charming and funny, and I love that her body is mentioned almost exclusively in positive ways. “Plus-size women are always being told to shrink,” says Mavis. “So, I just really wanted to take beautiful kings and queens and nonbinary royalty and showcase them in beautiful bright, bold colors in the light.”
