Lisanne Falk is officially the last remaining Heather. On Monday, the actress took to Instagram to mourn Shannen Doherty days after her Heathers co-star’s death.
The women starred in the 1989 film, with Falk playing Heather McNamara, Doherty playing Heather Duke, and Kim Walker playing Heather Chandler. Walker died in 2001 after a brain tumor, while Doherty died earlier this month after a battle with cancer, meaning that Falk is the final living person of the trio from the dark comedy.
“I’ve felt quite conflicted about whether I should post anything about Shannen’s passing,” Falk wrote on Instagram. “TBH, Shannen and I weren’t friends. I hadn’t seen or spoken to her since the cast & crew screening of HEATHERS, the movie that defined us both in a public fashion.”
“By chance…I had recently listened to her podcast and was genuinely moved by her desire to ‘set the record straight’ as she owned up to some of the uncomfortable hunks of truth in her past,” she continued of Doherty’s Let’s Be Clear podcast. “We’ve all got them. Yet Shannen’s courage in addressing them publicly as her health deteriorated, well, there is really only one response- How…very!”
Falk noted that she’s “truly saddened to hear the news” of Doherty’s death, adding, “If her portrayal of Heather Duke were to serve as her epitaph, I, for one, as the last remaining Heather would think it more than sufficient.”
“Certainly no one else could have landed the line: ‘Veronica, why are you pulling my dick?’ like Shannen did,” Falk quipped of Doherty’s iconic line to Winona Ryder’s Veronica Sawyer in the movie.
“Apparently my generation has reached that station in life where it’s time we look back in order to try to understand how we got here. Tragically, Heather Chandler never had the chance to reflect, and now Heather Duke was interrupted just as she was clearing her throat,” she continued. “If it is Heather McNamara’s fate to have the last word for the Heathers, then let it be this: It’s been an honor to occupy our own little patch of the zeitgeist, together as one, out here on the fringe, where all the cool kids hang, a cult classic.”
Falk concluded her post by writing, “Thank you, Heather. And Heather. ❤️💚💛 May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest, Shannen. You always had the balls, didn’t you? For better or worse, no more pulling your dick.”
Doherty died on July 13 after a battle with cancer.
“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie,” her longtime publicist, Leslie Sloane, told ET in a statement. “The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
Since then, Olivia Munn has recalled how Doherty helped her amid her own cancer battle, the late Luke Perry’s daughter has paid tribute to her dad’s Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star, and Doherty’s former co-stars have remembered the actress on social media.
The actress’ mom, Rosa Doherty, also spoke out in a statement to ET, which read, “She is my beautiful girl and my heart. Our family wants to thank everyone who has shown love and support for our Shannen throughout her life. We are truly appreciative.”
