Crosstalk between the embryo and the developing placenta relies on same signal for multiple messages

In mammals, signalling between the placenta and the embryo is essential for successful development. Here, a quantitative, time-resolved model describes the coordinated formation of the mouse embryo and placenta. The model reveals new effects of BMP4 protein signalling on cell-fate decisions, such as specifying the size of the germ-cell pool.
