Matthew Gray Gubler is returning to TV!
While that means he won’t be returning to Criminal Minds, I daresay this might be better.
After entertaining us for so long as part of an ensemble, he’ll now headline an upcoming CBS procedural that is currently titled Einstein. That title is subject to change, but the name recognition might work to its benefit.
According to Deadline, Gubler will star in and produce the new show.
The good news with Einstein is plentiful. It hails from Monk creator and executive producer Andy Breckman and director and executive producer Randy Zisk.
This is excellent news for Criminal Minds fans who miss fan favorite Gubler on the small screen.
That’s especially true since Criminal Minds is now on Paramount+, and there are still holdouts who either refuse to buy or can’t afford streamers.
Even better? Since Gubler wasn’t able to return to Criminal Minds due to scheduling issues, he may have a better chance of jumping in for an arc if Paramount controls his schedule.
Of course, this is pilot news, but with this talented group of people, we have little doubt that it won’t wow the network brass. There’s just too much going for this one not to be greenlit.
If we get a double whammy from this, my little heart will be singing a sweet song!
But what, exactly, is Einstein all about?
First of all, the series is based on a German series that ran from 2017-2019.
The description of that series is: Felix Winterberg helps police in Bochum to avoid drug charges. Meanwhile, Albert Einstein’s ill great-grandson is reluctant to aid Commissioner Elena Lange.
CBS’s version of Einstein will focus on Lew Einstein, a “brilliant but directionless” tenured professor who “spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his bad boy antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective solve her most puzzling cases.”
Living under the weight of his great-grandfather’s name, Lew has been unable to find a path that would live up to the name.
By solving homicide cases, he just may find the purpose in life he’s desperately been seeking.
Being a genius will come easily to Gubler, a trait Lew shared with Criminal Minds Spencer Reid.
Gubler didn’t get much of a chance to play to his comedic talents on Criminal Minds, but when he did, they played beautifully.
Einstein is a comedic drama that will give Gubler a chance to show his comedic chops.
We’ve been craving more Blue Sky programming, and it seems Hollywood has finally recognized that.
Elsbeth, High Potential, and now Einstein scratch the itch we need to solve crimes with lighthearted banter rather than life-and-death stakes for the detectives and victims.
While we would have expected a Monk series to land in the NBCU family now that USA Network is ramping up scripted programming again, this is better for Gubler fans.
It’s even better for Monk fans hoping to get that same vibe, as they can watch it with an antenna. Yes, people still do that!
